Shaun Benfield

A keen footballer for almost 20 years while he was in the Army, it was the continuous knocks and kicks that tempted Benfield to have a go at a Sprint triathlon – at the tender age of 36! His first event was at Cotswold Water Park in 2002 and the following year, he tried his first Middle distance race at Weymouth. This was the race where he caught the bug for long course racing. In 2005, Benfield took part in the UK Ironman, his first attempt at the distance. To date, he has completed over 80 triathlons of varying distances, with many podium places, a 34th overall at UK Ironman 70.3, multiple AG and Team wins and a GB Age Group place to his name. He has been picked to race for GB at the long Course championships later this year.

A major health scare in October 2009 has not diminished his commitment to the sport or the team. “The doctors tell me I’ll be alright, as long as I stay away from Ironman distance,” he jokes. “I'll take their advice with a small pinch of salt, but fully intend on competing at Long course again this year !”
